Ridgecrest, Kern County
Ridgecrest grew up outside the gate of the naval weapons station at China Lake, established in 1943, where engineers developed the Sidewinder missile. The base also protects canyons holding one of the largest concentrations of ancient rock art in North America. In July 2019 two strong earthquakes, the larger of magnitude 7.1, struck just northeast of the city within two days.
